Satchin Panda
Circadian rhythm researcher, author of The Circadian Code
Satchin Panda is a circadian biologist who studies how light, sleep and the timing of meals affect health. At the Salk Institute, where he worked from 2004 until August 2026, his lab helped show how melanopsin sets the body clock and found that limiting mice on a high-fat diet to an 8-hour eating window protected them from obesity. He wrote The Circadian Code and The Circadian Diabetes Code.

Recommends a consistent window of about 8 to 10 hours as the place to start, says a 12-hour window suits almost anyone, warns that very short windows can lead to under-eating in active people, and notes that much of the evidence is still from male mice.
