Cerebrolysin

No trial has tested Cerebrolysin in healthy people to slow brain aging or sharpen thinking, so the reason most self-experimenters take it has no human evidence behind it.

The best data come from patients. A 2023 Cochrane review of seven stroke trials found it probably does not reduce deaths, and it found more non-fatal serious adverse events with Cerebrolysin than with placebo [1]. In vascular dementia, a Cochrane review found small gains in cognition from trials at high risk of bias, and warned the effect may be too small to matter [2]. A wider review of animal-derived brain drugs reached the same view: modest, low-certainty benefits [3].

Trials run with the manufacturer's support report small to medium gains in recovery after brain injury and stroke [4] [5]. Independent reviewers rate the overall evidence as weak, and what it does in a healthy brain is unknown.

• Cerebrolysin is not approved by the FDA. In the United States it reaches buyers through gray-market sellers, where quality and dose are uncertain.
• Daily injections or infusions carry the usual risks of needles: infection, bruising and, with poor sourcing, contamination.
• It comes from pig brain tissue, so people with allergies to pork products or to the drug should not use it.
• In stroke trials, people on Cerebrolysin had more non-fatal serious adverse events than people on placebo.
• Its safety in healthy people over months or years has not been studied. Ask a doctor before trying it, especially with epilepsy, kidney disease or other medicines.
